Rain, wind, an unforgettable sunset, and a whole lot of love at RGNY Vineyard in Riverhead, New York.
Some love stories are extra special to be part of, especially when you've been there since the very beginning. Billy and Maddy's story is one of those for us. From a surprise proposal in Boston's Seaport to a beautiful vineyard wedding on Long Island, we've had the privilege of capturing some of the biggest moments of their lives. And let me tell you, their wedding day was one we won't soon forget!
A nor'easter may have had other plans for the weather, but nothing was going to stop these two from having the most incredible celebration surrounded by the people they love.
From a Seaport Proposal to a Long Island Wedding
Let's rewind to 2025.
We were just a couple of weeks away from photographing Bri and Max's wedding when Billy reached out with a very important plan. He was getting ready to propose to his girlfriend, Maddy, and wanted someone there to capture the moment. Bri and Max had referred him to us, and I was so excited to be part of the surprise!
The proposal took place in Boston's Seaport, where Billy got down on one knee and completely stunned Maddy. But the surprises didn't stop there! Their families had been hiding nearby in the bushes, waiting for the big moment. Once Maddy said yes, everyone came popping out to celebrate!
It was such a sweet, joyful moment, and getting to capture those genuine reactions was amazing.
So when Billy and Maddy reached out to ask us to photograph and film their wedding, we couldn't have been more excited. There's something so special about watching a couple's story unfold and being invited back to capture the next chapter.
Getting Ready as the Storm Rolled In
Fast forward to their wedding day in Riverhead, Long Island, New York, at the beautiful RGNY Vineyard.
Now, when you picture a romantic vineyard wedding, you're probably imagining rolling vines, golden sunshine, and a beautiful outdoor ceremony. What you probably aren't picturing is a full-blown nor'easter!
Well, Mother Nature decided to make an appearance, bringing plenty of rain, strong winds, and some pretty dramatic skies.
But if there's one thing I've learned from photographing weddings all over New England, it's that the weather doesn't define the day. The people do.
Billy and Maddy chose to skip a traditional first look, saving that emotional moment of seeing one another for the ceremony. I absolutely love when couples make that decision because it's what feels right for them.
We were still able to capture portraits with their individual wedding party members and families before the ceremony, making the most of our time together.
Maddy did, however, have a first look with her dad, and oh my goodness, the tears! Seeing his reaction to his beautiful daughter in her wedding gown was such a touching moment. Those are the kinds of memories that remind me exactly why I love what I do.
An Emotional Indoor Wedding Ceremony at RGNY Vineyard
With the rain and wind showing no signs of letting up, the ceremony was moved indoors.
And you know what? It was absolutely beautiful.
There's something incredibly intimate about an indoor ceremony, especially when the room is filled with the people who mean the most to you. The weather outside almost seemed to disappear as everyone's attention turned to Billy and Maddy.
After choosing to wait until the ceremony to see each other, the moment had finally arrived.
Their ceremony was filled with emotion, heartfelt words, and so much love. Hearing about the relationship these two have built and how much they mean to one another was genuinely moving.
You could feel the love throughout the room, not just between Billy and Maddy, but from every family member and friend who had come to celebrate them.
A nor'easter might have changed the ceremony location, but it certainly didn't take away from the magic of the moment.
Vineyard Portraits and the Most Incredible Stormy Sunset
Following the ceremony, we spent cocktail hour capturing family portraits, wedding party photos, and, of course, some much-anticipated portraits of the newlyweds.
RGNY Vineyard in Riverhead provided such a beautiful setting for their celebration. With its vineyard atmosphere and gorgeous reception space, it was the perfect backdrop for a romantic Long Island wedding.
And then, just when we thought Mother Nature had given us nothing but rain and wind all day, she decided to show off.
As the sun began to set, the sky absolutely exploded with the most incredible shades of orange and purple. The storm clouds created this dramatic, colorful backdrop that was unlike anything we could have planned.
Was it still raining? Yes.
Was it windy? Absolutely.
Did I ask Billy and Maddy to come outside anyway? You bet I did!
And these two were completely game.
We stepped outside to take advantage of that incredible sky, and the results were SO worth it. There's something about those unpredictable, fleeting moments that makes wedding photography so exciting. You can't schedule a sunset like that, especially in the middle of a nor'easter!
Those stormy sunset portraits were easily one of the highlights of the day, and such a perfect reminder that sometimes the most unexpected circumstances create the most beautiful photographs.
A Beautiful Reception Filled With Personal Touches
Inside, the reception space was ready for a celebration!
One of my favorite little details was the table numbers, which featured childhood photos of Billy and Maddy. I absolutely love when couples incorporate personal touches like this into their wedding decor. It's such a sweet way to share a little more of their story with their guests.
Billy and Maddy made their grand entrance and went straight into their first dance as husband and wife. It was such a beautiful moment, surrounded by the people who had watched their love story grow.
Following their first dance, we heard heartfelt speeches from Maddy's dad, her maid of honor, and Billy's "best people," his brother and sister.
There were laughs, there were tears, and there were so many wonderful words shared about this incredible couple.
After a sweet little cake-cutting moment, it was time for the parent dances.
Maddy shared a beautiful dance with her father before Billy took the floor with his mom.
And then came a moment I don't think I'll ever forget.
Halfway through his mother-son dance, Billy invited his aunt to join him on the dance floor. His aunt had lost her son, and Billy wanted to share that special moment with her.
I don't even know how to put into words how emotional it was to witness.
There are moments during weddings when I'm so focused on capturing everything happening around me, and then there are moments that hit me right in the heart. This was one of them. I couldn't stop my own tears from flowing as I photographed such a meaningful gesture.
It was a beautiful reminder that weddings are about so much more than two people getting married. They're about family, connection, honoring the people we love, and making memories that will last a lifetime.
An Absolutely INSANE Dance Floor!
Okay, now let's talk about this party.
Because WOW.
Once the formalities wrapped up and the dance floor opened, it was absolute insanity in the best possible way!
The DJ was incredible, the saxophone player brought so much energy, and this crowd was READY to celebrate.
The music was fantastic, the dance floor was packed, and there was no shortage of people letting loose and having the time of their lives. These are the kinds of receptions where you find yourself smiling behind the camera because the energy is just contagious.
We stayed right through to the very end, and I'm so glad we did.
As the evening came to a close, everyone gathered together on the dance floor, arms wrapped around one another, forming a huge circle for one final song.
After a day filled with so many emotional moments, seeing everyone come together like that was the perfect way to end the celebration.
And because Billy and Maddy clearly know how to make an exit, their night ended with a classic Rolls-Royce waiting to whisk them away.
Talk about a grand finale!
A Wedding Day We'll Never Forget
When I think back on Billy and Maddy's wedding, I won't remember the nor'easter as something that ruined their plans. I'll remember the way they embraced their day, the love that surrounded them, the incredible sunset that appeared out of nowhere, and a dance floor filled with some of the happiest people.
But more than anything, I'll remember how special it was to be part of their story.
From Billy's surprise proposal in the Seaport, with their families hiding in the bushes, to standing alongside them on one of the biggest days of their lives, couples like this really do start to feel like family.
We spend so much time with our couples, getting to know them, their families, and the people closest to them. By the time the wedding day arrives, we're not just showing up with cameras. We're genuinely invested in their happiness.
Billy and Maddy, we absolutely adore you guys. Thank you for trusting us to capture your proposal and your wedding day, for braving that wild weather with me, and for allowing us to be part of so many incredible memories.
We wish you both a lifetime of love, laughter, adventures, and maybe just a little less rain on your anniversaries!
