Shannon & Joshua | A Romantic Summer Wedding at Willowdale Estate in Topsfield, MA

Nestled within the beautiful Bradley Palmer State Park in Topsfield, Massachusetts, Willowdale Estate is one of those wedding venues that feels like something straight out of a fairytale. With its historic stone architecture, ivy-covered walls, lush greenery, and intimate courtyard, it's the perfect setting for a romantic New England wedding. Every corner of the property offers something beautiful, and it's easy to see why so many couples fall in love with this venue!

Shannon and Joshua's wedding day was a beautiful celebration of love, family, and tradition. Rather than having a traditional wedding party, they chose to keep things intimate, with Shannon's sister and Joshua's brothers by their sides. Their day was filled with meaningful moments, Jewish wedding traditions, and so much love from the family and friends who gathered to celebrate them. It was truly a beautiful day to witness!

Getting Ready at Willowdale Estate

The morning began inside Willowdale Estate, where Shannon and Joshua got ready in their respective suites surrounded by their immediate families. There was such a relaxed and intimate feeling to the morning, with everyone enjoying those final moments before the celebrations began.

I started the day photographing Shannon's beautiful wedding details, creating flat lays with her accessories and all the little pieces that helped tell the story of their day. From there, I captured the finishing touches as Shannon stepped into her gorgeous wedding gown with the help of her mother and sister. These are always some of my favorite moments to photograph... the excitement, the anticipation, and those sweet interactions between family members before everything officially begins.

Meanwhile, down the hall, my second shooter was with Joshua and his family, capturing his brothers and loved ones helping him get ready to see his bride. With no traditional wedding party to coordinate, the morning was really all about spending quality time with the people closest to them.

A Romantic First Look Surrounded by Greenery

Once everyone was ready, it was time for Shannon and Joshua's first look! We tucked ourselves into a quiet little nook just outside the estate, surrounded by the beautiful greenery that makes Willowdale such a wonderful location for wedding portraits.

The moment Joshua turned around and saw Shannon was absolutely beautiful. His eyes lit up as he took in his bride in her stunning gown, holding a bouquet bursting with vibrant summer colors. Those bright florals were such a gorgeous contrast against the soft greens of the property!

After giving the two a moment to take it all in, we wandered through the grounds for their couples portraits. One of my favorite things about photographing weddings at Willowdale Estate is the variety of beautiful backdrops, from the romantic stonework to the towering trees and lush greenery surrounding the property. We took advantage of it all before gathering their families for portraits ahead of the ceremony.

A Beautiful Ketubah Signing and Jewish Wedding Ceremony

Before the ceremony, Shannon and Joshua gathered for a meaningful Jewish wedding tradition, the signing of the ketubah.

For those unfamiliar, a ketubah is a traditional Jewish marriage contract that outlines the couple's commitments and responsibilities to one another. Beyond its religious significance, it is often a beautifully designed piece of artwork that becomes a treasured keepsake for the couple. Shannon and Joshua's ketubah was absolutely stunning, beautifully framed and displayed for their guests to admire as they arrived.

The ceremony itself took place in Willowdale's lush courtyard, one of the most romantic spaces on the property. Surrounded by the estate's historic architecture and greenery, Shannon and Joshua stood beneath a gorgeous chuppah adorned with breathtaking floral arrangements. In Jewish tradition, the chuppah symbolizes the home the couple will build together, with its open sides representing hospitality and welcoming loved ones into their lives.

A string quartet provided beautiful music, adding an elegant touch to an already incredible setting.

Their ceremony thoughtfully incorporated several traditional Jewish elements, beginning with the seven circles, a symbolic ritual representing the creation of a new life together. The ceremony also included blessings, the sharing of wine, and the breaking of the glass, one of the most recognizable Jewish wedding traditions. The breaking of the glass carries several interpretations, including remembering the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing moments of joy.

There was also a beautiful Catholic reading delivered by Shannon's sister, bringing another meaningful element into the ceremony and honoring the blending of their families and traditions.

It was such a heartfelt celebration, and you could truly feel the love surrounding these two as they officially became husband and wife!

Cocktails, Courtyard Portraits, and a Romantic Tent Reception

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktail hour with delicious bites and colorful drinks while mingling throughout the estate. The courtyard was buzzing with excitement as everyone celebrated the newlyweds!

We snuck Shannon and Joshua away for a few additional portraits in the courtyard before heading into the reception. The light, the greenery, and that gorgeous historic stonework made for the perfect backdrop.

The reception took place beneath Willowdale Estate's beautiful tent, which offers an elegant setting while still allowing guests to enjoy the surrounding gardens and estate grounds.

Joshua made a quick outfit change into a sharp navy jacket before the newlyweds made their entrance and went straight into their first dance. It was such a sweet way to begin the evening's celebrations!

Throughout dinner, guests were treated to heartfelt speeches from Shannon's mother, Joshua's parents, Shannon's sister, and Joshua's brothers. With such a family-centered wedding, it felt especially meaningful to hear from so many of the people closest to them. There was so much love in that room, and it was wonderful to witness the relationships that have shaped these two into the people they are today.

After dinner, we headed back into the courtyard, where Shannon and Joshua shared their cake cutting beneath the beautiful summer evening sky.

The Hora, Dancing, and Sweet Treats Under the Stars

When it was finally time to open the dance floor, Shannon and Joshua kicked things off with one of my favorite Jewish wedding traditions... the hora!

If you've never experienced a hora at a wedding, you're missing out on some serious fun! Guests join hands and dance in circles, traditionally to the song Hava Nagila, surrounding the newlyweds with excitement and celebration. The highlight, of course, is when the couple is lifted high into the air on chairs while their family and friends dance and cheer around them.

It is such an energetic, joyful tradition, and Shannon and Joshua's guests were ALL IN! There were smiles everywhere, hands in the air, and so much laughter as everyone celebrated the happy couple.

And once the hora wrapped up, the energy certainly didn't slow down. The dance floor was packed, and everyone was ready to party the night away!

For anyone needing a little break from dancing, the courtyard offered a fun s'mores station where guests could gather and enjoy a sweet treat. And of course, no wedding at Willowdale Estate would be complete without their famous house-made cookies! If you've ever attended an event here, you know exactly what I'm talking about. They are always such a hit!

A Beautiful Celebration of Love, Family, and Tradition

Shannon and Joshua's wedding was such a wonderful reminder that some of the most meaningful celebrations are the ones that focus on what matters most... the people you love and the traditions that bring everyone together.

From the intimate moments getting ready with their families to their emotional first look, beautiful courtyard ceremony, and an absolutely incredible night on the dance floor, every part of their day felt personal and full of love.

Willowdale Estate provided the perfect backdrop for their summer wedding, blending historic New England charm with gorgeous gardens and an intimate atmosphere that suited their celebration beautifully.

Shannon and Joshua, thank you so much for trusting us to capture your wedding day! It was an honor to witness the love you share, the beautiful traditions you incorporated, and the incredible community of family and friends surrounding you. Wishing you both a lifetime of love, laughter, and happiness!
